There are standard requirements for this template these are listed below:
- The Cover which is a sleeve, has to be printable on an a standard A4 piece of paper.
- The size of the covers' front and back panels needs to be 129.5mm x 183mm, and the spine needs to be 14mm in width.
- There needs to be a bleed area, this is 3.175mm all around the cover.
- CYMK Colour needs to be used, as the cover is to be printed.
- The project needs a DPI of at least 300.
- Any images and text need to be 1.5875mm away from any edge at the least.
To begin, a new Photoshop project is needed:
The overall width is determined by the sum of the covers front, back and spine panel width's.
Which is: (129.5*2)+14 = 273mm
The width and height has been changed to be measured in millimeters as opposed to pixels as its a physical case cover I'm making. Color Mode also needs to be changed from RGB to CYMK as that makes all the colour blending work as if working with inks whereas others treat the colours how a screen and light colours interact. Finally a high Pixel per Inch has been set of 300 for high quality when printed.
Before I can start adding the guides/rulers to the project I need to make sure they are enabled, this can be done by pressing Ctrl+r or going to view and clicking Rulers. Be sure to right click on the ruler either along the top or side and make sure milimetres is selected.
The first rulers I added where the 2 which make up the spine and which will quickly mark out the 2 main panels.
To add rulers go to View and New Guide.
First ruler, left panel marker: 129.5
Second ruler, right panel marker: 143.5 (total width minus panel length)
Then I enter the rulers marking the bleed areas as well as the lines for image and text boundaries.
Vertical:
- 1.5875mm
- 271.4125mm
- 127.9125mm
- 131.0875mm
- 141.9125mm
- 145.0875mm
Horizontal:
- 1,5875mm
- 181.4125mm
After all the guides have been placed I lock them in place, by gonig to view Lock Guides.
